Since 2016, the CAS has hosted residencies for artists of color whose work mines and expands the possibilities of Black futurism. Artists-in-residence are housed in a large private apartment at Public Space One’s repurposed 19th-century house near downtown Iowa City, IA – a building that also houses the CAS reading room, PS1’s busy gallery and performance space, artist studios, and community organizations. Residents have access to resources that include the CAS reading room collection, PS1’s community studios (the Iowa City Press Co-op, the Media Arts Co-op) and outdoor spaces, and community connections fostered by the CAS team before, during, and after their residency. Artists are asked to share their work with the community via a youth workshop and/or public programs for adults.
We offer four fully funded residencies per year. Fully funded residencies offer a stipend, a travel allowance, onsite housing, and support for programming. In order to broaden access, we also now offer an option to self-fund residencies. Pay-your-own-way residencies will offer access to studio space, housing, and PS1 facilities for $700/week. Travel, material, and programming funds will not be supplied. Note that self-funded residents may, but are not expected to, produce public programs. They may also be eligible to teach paid community workshops while onsite.
